HISTORY
In 1945, there was a tremendous housing shortage across the country and particularly in the Statesville, North Carolina area. Residents of Statesville were in need of competent and reliable home builders. It was then that the late Gordon L. Wilson, with only ten employees and limited resources, set out to meet the market demand by founding G.L. Wilson Building Company. By 1950, the company shifted its emphasis from residential to industrial and public construction. G.L. Wilson built many schools, hospitals, clinics, mills, and manufacturing facilities. As G.L. Wilson Building Company's expertise grew, in the 1960s the company expanded its reach from a local to a multi-state general contractor. The 70s saw continued growth in various types and locations of projects, as well as employee growth with the addition of skilled trades, office personnel and fleet of equipment. G.L. Wilson Building Company expanded into Virginia with a regional office located in Norfolk. With this addition, the retail component of the business grew with the construction of many shopping center and retail stores throughout the Tidewater area. The company moved into a new headquarters building, which incorporated many sustainable design features, in Statesville in 1985. The 80s and 90s were marked by the construction of large office manufacturing plants for national and international customers. In addition to our continuing work within the retail and industrial markets, today, through the Wilson Foundation, the company is very involved with local not for profit organizations, lending design and construction expertise to help organizations provide various community services. We are continuing to expand our reach by offering design build services, through partnership with architects as well as using in-house design resources, enabling G.L. Wilson to provide unique and specific design solutions to meet their customer's needs. Over the years, there have been many changes within the construction industry. We firmly believe that skill, responsibility and integrity are as important to our business as brick, steel and mortar are to a well-constructed building. Our goal of working as a team to produce quality products, efficiently and economically, has remained the same since the company was formed in 1945. "As we say, so shall we do..." the philosophy of our founder, G.L. Wilson, continues today. |
