Civil Engineer

Classification: Full Time

This position is responsible for professional engineering work in support of a wide range of complex commercial and industrial construction projects. Emphasis is on preparation of construction drawings, calculations, applications, and other documents as required to gain approval from regulatory agencies in a timely manner.

Duties and Responsibilities
Design and Engineering
  • Design storm water management systems including swales, piping systems, ponds, etc. using storm water modeling and design software.

  • Prepare site plans for client authorization, ultimately gaining municipal approval. Design philosophy should complement neighboring properties while meeting project parameters and budget.

  • Conduct on site inspections to verify work is being performed in accordance with the construction drawings.

  • Coordinate design with other disciplines assisting on the project (architectural, survey, geotechnical, M/E/P, etc.)

  • Assist Project Manager with quantity estimates on in house design as well as bid projects.

Project Support
  • Coordinate and maintain open communication with Superintendent/Project Manager regarding project schedule and constructability to assure project success.

  • Provide technical advice to Project Managers and Superintendents regarding design, construction modifications or schedule.

  • Witness and certify required testing and inspections for utility installations (potable water, sanitary sewer, SCM, etc.)

Scheduling
  • Provide input into the scheduling of projects to meet the client’s required deadline.

  • Anticipate and resolve unforeseen circumstances encountered in the field to eliminate delays and costly rework.

 

Qualifications
Education/Experience
  • Four-year degree in engineering

  • N.C. professional engineering license

  • 3 to 5 years experience as a PE preferred

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD with design and drafting and a working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and Carlson Civil Suite

  • Experience with planning and zoning processes and land development ordinances

 

Knowledge
  • Civil engineering with emphasis on storm water management and erosion control ordinances.

  • Proficiency with site plan development using AutoCAD/Civil 3D, design/engineering for commercial construction, information analysis, customer relations, reporting skills, estimating, decision-making, teamwork, documentation skills and quality focus.

  • Storm water management and erosion control design standards and ordinances​

 

Site Coordination Skills
  • Understanding of Earthwork and Storm Drainage Installation Methods, Field Experience is a plus

  • Understanding of GPS machine control and coordination with AutoCAD Civil 3D and Carlson Civil Suite

  • Understanding of soil mechanics and methods for achieving soil compaction/density as required by project specifications.

  • Ability/willingness to troubleshoot field conflicts with field personnel.

  • Ability/Willingness to adjust to changing field conditions to support field productivity. 

 

Other Skills and Abilities
  • Engineering and Technology. Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment.

  • Design. Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.

  • Building and Construction. Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in commercial construction.

  • Critical Thinking. Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

  • Complex Problem Solving. Identify complex problems and review related information in order to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

  • Communicating with Supervisors, Peers or Subordinates. Ability to provide information and support to supervisors, co-workers and subordinates by telephone, in written form, email or in person.
